No. 3: Achilles' Last Stand

Costumes: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7
#1
Precedes title page of No. 3.

Clothing:

Very loose-fitting, light-colored blouse, with body and sleeves gathered into rounded yoke. Wide collar with ruffle trim around edge. Long sleeves, very full, gathered to ruffled cuffs. Worn open in front and not tucked into trousers.

Light-colored trousers, fitted to below knee and flared at ankles. From the way the flare drapes, probably quite lightweight fabric.

Accessories:

Dark scarf knotted loosely around neck.

Dark sash; fastening not visible.

Comments:

Dorianesque lounging pajamas?

Title page, No. 3.

Clothing:

A few folds of light-colored fabric are visible, which may be a wrap or some sort of draped garment. (Of course, it could also be a bedsheet.) It is draped over the left shouder, and tucked through the bracelet on the right wrist. Right shoulder is bare.

Accessories:

Dark pearl necklace, long, worn in three loops.

Heavy, patterned cuff bracelet on right wrist.

Ring on third finger of right hand. Faint indication of pattern visible.

He is holding a square medallion, decorated with an image of a rose & leaves. Not sure what this is.

Comments:

Can't really see enough of this one to have much of an idea what it's like. The fabric tucked through the bracelet is interesting, though.

Dorian's residence in Switzerland.

Clothing:

Dark, fitted shirt; wide collar; long, fitted sleeves. Worn open at collar.

Light-colored sweater, sleeveless, V-necked, with ribbing around neckline and hem.

Close-fitting trousers of medium color, jeans styling, low waistline.

Light-colored boots.

Accessories:

Scarf, medium color, worn cravat-style around the neck, with ends tucked into neckline of shirt.

Dark belt with open rectangular metal buckle.

The ring is clearly visible on the ring finger of his right hand in one drawing, and is definitely not there in another, so either he takes it off during the scene or the artist is getting careless.

Comments:

The sweater-vest ends at the natural waistline, but the waist of the trousers is a few inches lower (Dorian is still wearing hip-huggers), leaving a band of the shirt visible between the two. I think this looks unbalanced and not at all flattering, as though the vest were too small for him.

During flight back to England, theft of the Achilles, and visit to Caesar.

Clothing:

Dark, scoop-necked top.

Light-colored shirt, fitted, slightly gathered to yoke in front. Open to waist in front. Shirt ends at waistline with a narrow band at hem, extending into tie ends which are tied in a bow at center front. Long sleeves, with cuffs turned back to mid-forearm length.

Light-colored trousers, close-fitting, side welt pocket.

Accessories:

Light-colored pearl necklace, long, worn in two loops.

Three narrow bangle bracelets on left wrist.

The ring is back.

Comments:

Quite a long time for Dorian to stay in one costume. It's flattering, if not especially memorable -- though I don't think the pearl necklace really fits in.

Portugal, during meeting with the Major at Dorian's residence.

Clothing:

Sleeveless, fitted shirt, described in dialogue as red. Deep V-neck, wide collar.

Light-colored trousers, close-fitting, jeans styling with low waistline.

Light-colored boots.

Accessories:

Long, gauzy scarf around neck, tied at left, with ends dangling to below waist.

Dark belt with open rectangular metal buckle.

Three bangle bracelets on left wrist.

The ring.

Comments:

Another "flashy" red shirt. And the combination of that long scarf and the racy car he was driving (probably red as well) brought to mind the death of dancer Isadora Duncan, whose neck was broken when the end of the long scarf she wore became tangled in the wheel spokes of the Italian racecar she was taking for a test ride. I hope Dorian was more careful.

On the Michelangelo.

Clothing:

Long-sleeved turtleneck top, dark -- probably black -- and close-fitting, most likely knit fabric.

Dark (prob. black) very close-fitting trousers or leggings, tucked into boots. These and top could also be a one-piece catsuit.

Light-colored boots, to below knee.

Accessories:

Light-colored scarf around neck, knotted at middle of chest.

Light-colored narrow belt with rectangular buckle.

No ring (or any other jewelry.)

Comments:

Working garb. And I only chose this picture because it's the best full-length view of this costume. Really.

At the Louvre.

Clothing:

Light-colored top, scoop-necked, close-fitting, has narrow trim around neckline.

Light-colored, close-fitting trousers, tucked into boots.

Dark, very loose-fitting coat, flared from shoulders, upper calf length. Wide collar and lapels. Fitted sleeves with wide, turned-back cuffs. Topstitched edges on cuffs, collar, and lapels; these and the lining are light-colored.

Dark boots, low heels, to below knee, with wide, light-colored cuffs.

Accessories:

Narrow choker (can't tell whether it's metal or cord), with bead or knot in center front.

Dark belt with open rectangular metal buckle.

Comments:

Back to the standard look with tank top, tight trousers, boots, and voluminous wrap.
